The WP Built-in Ping System

MaxBlogPress Ping optimizer

The WordPress built in Blog Pinging system works but is extremely basic and does not really give you any options as to how you would like it to function nor does it provide you with anyway of knowning whether your pings are actually successful! This plugin from the guys at MaxBlogPress expands the wordpress functionality in regards to pinging substantially giving you control.

The mayor improvements over the stranded pinging in WordPress are:

  • It makes sure that an article is only pinged when it is first published and not after an edit as WordPress does by default. This avoids you possibly getting banned by any of the ping services for spam (you can hardly say you’ve got new content when you’ve just changed a misspelling or 2 ;) )
  • It gives you more control over when your blog pings, so for instance you can tell your blog to ping when ever you like even if you aren’t posting new content or you can have the blog only ping every so many posts just encase you were running a very large blog.
  • It Provides you with a color coded log (green for successful and red for failed) that shows when and what your blog pinged, which services worked and which did not and what type of ping they were.

I always install this plugin on every blog I start. Especially because of its log which allows me to see at a glance whether or not my pings are successful. As with all free MaxBlogPress plugins you do have to register it with them and subscribe to their newsletter, however if you do not like their emails you can always unsubscribe at anytime as they use Aweber.

This plugin is on my list of my favorite WordPress Blog Plugins.

    Hi ,

I came across this plugin months ago. Actually, when I first moved to WordPress. This plugin is cool and helps us users out.

I also did not like the newsletter emails I got. I am happy that I used my domain email and not my gmail one. It is funny that the developer did not ask for a donation, but I guess he got many users using it and in return he used the newsletter to get readers and probably increase revenue. Just my opinion.

I run some plugins on my blog that I fear may cause my site to be flagged as a ping spammer:
    1) Standard WordPress pinging when creating / updating content.
    2) Sitemap pings from XML Sitemap plugin
    3) Pods plugin pings – does this plugin ping when pods content is created / updated? If so what services does it ping?

I also read that XML sitemaps pings automatically every hour. Is my site at risk and what are the thresholds for ping spam?

yep, he monetizes his plugins via the newsletter. From what i understand very few people ever donate, he probably makes a lot more money from his plugins via the newsletter, not to mention he\’s able to promote his own paid plugins.

With this plugin it will only ping when you publish the post, not when you edit it. I don\’t believe you\’ll have any problem with ths XML sitemap plugin, i use it on all my sites and I can see from my logs that it continues to pin OK. The plugin doesn\’t come with a list of services you have to add your own list, see my ping list post.
